Courageous Companion – Charlie Rule

Charlie is an 11 year old Labrador. He was brought in to Mullacott Veterinary Hospital as his owners had noticed that his gums were pale, he was subdued and not his usual self.

A range of tests were carried out, including blood tests that showed that Charlie had markedly low circulating red blood cells. Although over a few days, Charlie’s demeanour improved slightly; repeat blood tests showed that his red blood cell levels remained dangerously low. It was decided that he should undergo a blood transfusion.

A cross-matching test had to be carried out to determine Charlie’s blood type so he could be given the right blood. Although we took this precaution, giving any patient a blood transfusion carries risks. The body can reject the blood as foreign and can push patients into a severe shock like state. Charlie was nursed and monitored throughout his transfusion to ensure that any adverse reactions were noticed early and could be dealt with. Fortunately he had coped well.

The transfusion had increased his circulating red blood cells and had got Charlie to a point where he was no longer a high risk for anaesthesia. This meant we could begin an investigation into what might be the underlying reason for the anaemia. The key part of this investigation was a bone marrow biopsy. Bone marrow is where red blood cells are produced. However, when viewed under a microscope, it was found that immune cells in Charlie’s bone marrow were destroying the precursors of his red blood cells thus preventing
the production of red blood cells. He had been diagnosed with immune mediated anaemia.

Charlie improved at home for a while but unfortunately had a relapse and needed to return for a second blood transfusion. If medication did not start to control the anaemia, Charlie was in trouble.

We are pleased to say that Charlie has now been at home for a while and is recovering well. He still has regular blood tests and is on a range of medication whish has stopped the immune mediated destruction of his red blood cells. Throughout all his procedures, Charlie remained the perfect and patient! He has enjoyed the fuss given to him by the vets and nurses and is now getting back to leading a normal life.
