Work experience placements 2018-06-27T14:33:40+00:00

Project Description

As part of our commitment to education and support of our local community we offer a limited number of places for school work experience. Our high standards of care, vast array of diagnostic tools and extensive medical and surgical services allow placement students an insight into the day to day activities of a busy high quality Veterinary Hospital. Students that wish to see practice should be committed, interested and enthusiastic. We encourage questions and would stress that what you get out of your time at Charter Veterinary Hospital Group depends on what you put in. Successful students will be offered a one week placement.

What you can expect:

From the Health & Safety perspective, Veterinary practice is seen as a high risk environment with unpredictable animals that bite and scratch, ionising regulations, gaseous anaesthesia, sharp instruments, medicines, infectious agents, and very stressful and emotional situations. This means that the role of the work experience student is largely one of observation rather than participation.

Tasks undertaken by students on placement include:

  • Assisting the Nurses and Animal Nursing Assistants, feed, walk and tend to the patients’ needs

  • Cleaning kennels, utensils, floors and work surfaces

  • Washing and drying bedding and laundry

  • Observing Veterinary Surgeons and Nurses administer treatment and medications

  • Observing procedures and minor operations

  • Observing Hydrotherapy

  • Helping with the daily disinfecting and cleaning regime

Students in Years 10 & 11

If you are in Years 10 or 11 and wish to apply for a work experience placement with us, firstly you will need to attend one of our ‘Careers in Veterinary Practice talks’ to find out more about careers in veterinary practice and how our placement can assist you along this career path.

Careers in Veterinary Practice talks will be held in November 2018.

Once you have attended one of these talks you will have the opportunity to formally apply for a placement with us. This will involve the completion of an application form which will be assessed and responded to.

Due to high demand 2018 work experience placements for years 10-11, are already fully booked
